According to the Canadian (yes, Adore-A-Bull is Canadian) Kennel Club, a bulldog is a dignified looking medium sized dog, with a massive, short faced head, heavy, thick-set body, wide shoulders and sturdy limbs.

Another description of a bulldog is a large lump of solid dog with lots of wrinkles and sad eyes. Their disposition is sedate and easy-going, with aggressive bulldogs being few and far between. Being classified as a Non-Sporting Breed, you can imagine the level of activity most bulldogs enjoy...leisurely! Bulldogs make excellent family dogs because they don't mind being abused by children, and are tolerant of most living things, including other dogs - but, they are a breed that can be pushy and bullheaded, so first time dog owners really need to be sure they can give a bulldog the guidance and structured family life they require.
